    This is my first Stephen King experience, and probably my last. Just a ridiculous, pointless story, and poorly written. I should've stopped reading it but I didn't which makes me the mug.

    I read some of the reviews & thought I'd not enjoy Mr. Mercedes. But I did. It was thrilling & I loved the main characters. No, there's nothing supernatural occurring just a great read. If you love Stephen King you'll love the book.

  • Cliched but very good King

    King has written quite a few non supernatural books before but this is hailed as his proper crime thriller. I don't normally read a lot of hard boiled detective fiction but I'll read most anything King writes! It's insanely cliched but I think that was on purpose - it seems to be King forcing himself to adopt every single crime cliche and still get through it. It's certainly better than Doctor Sleep which was a real letdown with villains who are so ineffectual attempts at horror were generally hilarious. This is probably a scarier book in that the 'monster' is a pretty normal guy (well as normal as Kings young psychopaths get). Like most classic King it starts off with a grand and slow introduction with larger themes seemingly at work and then pretty much discards them in a high speed finale. But that's OK any King fan knows how he works now. It does seem early on that there's going to be a lot of thematic stuff about rich and poor and the global recession but that fizzles out after a few chapters and it's a straight cop hunts killer story. It's still a really fun read and King can obviously do the crime thriller genre no harm and hopefully he'll dip in again - maybe drop a few of the cliches just to see how it goes...
